Attempting to improve apple picking

The principle is all right, but I have a few details to work out

Jim planned to speed up this apple-picking chore.  He placed a pulley in the top of the tree and slipped a rope through it.  the rope had a barrel at one end, and was anchored to a tractor at the other end.  Jim filled the barrel with apples.  When he came down to untie the rope, the heavy barrel of apples through Jim in the air conking him on the head as it came down.

When the barrel hit the ground, the bottom came out of it.  Now the barrel was lighter than Jim, so up goes the barrel and down comes Jim.  Once again he got battered by the barrel.  When Jim hit the ground, he let go of the rope and now the barrel came down and hit him a third time.

“The principle is all right, but I have a few details to work out,” he said.
