Better to be pushing 40 than …
Oliver's not mean-spirited, but a little tactless sometimes ...
A true story - Some years ago, when I wore a younger man’s clothes (apologies to Billy Joel), an acquaintance of mine named Oliver came to my workplace. Oliver was (and still is) several years older than I; after talking shop with some of the other people, Oliver made an off-hand comment to me, “Wow, you must be pushing 40 years old now, huh?”
Off the top of my head I replied, “Better to be pushing 40 than to be pulling it.”
