Refer to Commander Smith

A very old, very funny joke - I first heard this on the 'Hogan's Heroes' TV show, where Colonel Hogan suggests it to Commandant Klink -- who, predictably, gets in trouble using it.

During World War II, there were two men working side by side in the War Production Board in Washington.  The two men never spoke to each other, but each watched the other.  One man quit work every day at four o’clock, while the other always worked until six o’clock or later.

Finally, the one man approached the other and asked, “Pardon me, but do you mind how you clean up all of your work every day by four o’clock?”

The other man replied, “Not at all.  When I come to a tough piece of work, I mark it ‘Refer to Commander Smith.’ I figure that in an outfit as large as this one, there is sure to be a Commander Smith.  I must be right, since none of those papers ever come back to me.”

The first man said, as he removed his coat, “Buddy, prepare for action.  I’m Commander Smith!”
